TSU Receives $600K Donation for Scholarships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee State University has received a $600,000 donation to be used for scholarships.

The school said in a news release this week that the estate of late alumna Vernice Marie Taylor Gray and her late husband, Elbert Gray Jr., donated the money to help students who want to attend TSU.

School officials say the money will fund two "financially disadvantaged" male and female students from Tennessee each year.

Vernice, a Memphis native, attended San Diego State University for one year before transferring to TSU.

In 1950, she graduated with a B.S. degree in social administration and a minor in Spanish.

She died in 2004. Her husband passed away last year.
