Cold Case – DNA Links Man to 2004 Rape and Kidnapping

Jackson Police Investigators presented evidence in a cold case rape and kidnapping to the Madison County Grand Jury on Tuesday. The grand jury returned indictments charging Jermaine Douglas, 28, with Aggravated Rape and Especially Aggravated Kidnapping.

Jermaine Douglas

On December 17, 2004 around 2:30 in the morning, a then 28-year-old woman was entering her residence in Park Place Apartments when she was approached from behind by a man armed with a gun. He ordered her not to turn around and made her go into a bedroom where he raped her. He threatened to kill her if she looked at him so she never saw his face. After the rape, the intruder ran out of the apartment.

The woman went to a local hospital where medical personnel completed a standard sexual assault evidence collection kit, which was later submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for DNA testing. A DNA profile was obtained and searched in the CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) database for forensic unknown samples. No matches were initially detected.

In November 2007 Douglas pleaded guilty to drug charges and as a convicted felon, a sample of his DNA was collected and entered into the CODIS database. During a later search, a match occurred between the unknown DNA sample from the 2004 rape and the Convicted Offender Specimen belonging to Douglas. Jackson Police Investigators served a search warrant for DNA on Douglas, collected an evidentiary sample and submitted it to the TBI for comparison. A
subsequent test confirmed the match. Douglas was arrested around 4:00 this morning on an unrelated Simple Domestic Assault warrant. He will be arraigned Thursday morning in Jackson
City Court on the assault charge and a hold was placed on him for the new charges. Formal arraignment and bond setting on the Aggravated Rape and Especially Aggravated Kidnapping will be in Madison County Circuit Court on a later date to be determined by the court.
