Legislation would encourage teachers to work in rural counties
(March 26, 2014) Nashville Tenn – State Sen. Lowe Finney's "Tennessee Teachers Scholarship Act" advanced out of the Senate Education Committee Tuesday.
"Students from rural communities deserve the same opportunities to attend college and come back to work for the benefit of their hometown," state Sen. Lowe Finney said. "At the same time, many of our rural districts struggle to retain high quality teachers. This scholarship will help us make progress on both of these issues."
The legislation would offer students with a GPA of 3.25 or an ACT score of 25 a $2,000 scholarship through the lottery scholarship program if they commit to teach in a rural district upon graduation. They can continue to receive the scholarship each year as long as they remain eligible for the HOPE scholarship.
The legislation (SB 1927) advances to the Senate Finance Committee. If approved by the full Senate, the scholarship would become available for the 2014-15 school year.
