(March 18, 2014) Jackson Tenn – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation into an assault on a correctional officer at the J. Alexander Leech Criminal Justice Complex/Jail at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to investigators Tray D. Chaney, age 20, an inmate at the jail, struck MCSD, Correctional Officer Daniel Birdwell, age 27, in the face several times.
Officer Birdwell was transported by a departmental vehicle to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he was treated and released.
Tray Chaney is currently awaiting trial on charges of Attempted First Degree Murder (2 counts), Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon During a Deadly Felony and Felony Evading Arrest.
New charges are anticipated pending the outcome of the investigation.
