(March 17, 2014) Jackson Tenn – When 25 Commissioners meet to make a county office appointment after 30 days to review resumes, talk with constituents, applicants, and county employees, you would assume they would reach a decision. However, Monday that was not to be the case.
When the Sheriff's seat was made vacant by the retirement of Sheriff David Woolfork, Chief Deputy Tommy Cunningham became Sheriff pending the appointment of a candidate to fill the 5 month remainder of the term.
However when commissioners met on Monday to take up nominations and select a successful candidate they were unable to come to a majority consensus
Sheriff Tommy Cunningham and JPD Captain Sammy Britt were nominated. On the first vote Cunningham received 11 votes and Britt got 9 votes, 5 passed. By rule the one with the lowest votes was removed which was Britt
On a second vote with only Cunningham on the ballot only 12 commissioners voted to affirm him to be the next Sheriff, 13 passed
By rule Cunningham will remain sheriff for another month until the commission meets again for another round
