County Commission Appoints Cunningham

Developing Story (April 21, 2014) JACKSON Tenn – Madison County Commission appoints acting Sheriff Tommy Cunningham Interim Sheriff to fill the unexpired term of David Woolfork.

Cunningham was immediately sworn in.

As Chief Deputy, Tommy Cunningham became acting Sheriff in January upon the retirement of former Sheriff David Woolfork.  The county commission is required to make an appointment to fill the unexpired term.  The legislative body nominates a candidate from the pool of resumes submitted by applicants. A successful candidate must receive a majority of the 25 commission votes.  In the first round of voting last month Cunningham fell one vote shy of the required 13 votes.

JPD Captain Sammy Britt was the only other nominated candidate. He received 9 votes the first round and 7 this time.

The vote was 17 – 7 -1
