Tyler Turner unrings Liberty’s bell, resigns as head football coach

Twenty five wins and an appearance in the the Class 3A state championship game in less than two calendar years wasn’t enough to convince Liberty head football coach Tyler Turner to stay put. Turner met with his Crusaders Monday morning then walked out the same door as former head coach Steve Hookfin and a string of state championship basketball coaches that have exited the Liberty stage.

Turner takes over as head coach at Olive Branch, MS.

The list of high caliber coaches leaving Liberty Tech is staggering. Two time state championship (basketball) coach Dexter Williams hung up his whistle after a battle over 4th block athletics and a job promotion.  Williams eventually returned to coaching but not in the JMCSS.

Arnett Bodenhammer followed Williams but barely finished a cup of coffee before he ejected.

Jared Jones followed and won Liberty’s 3rd state championship but didn’t stick around long after the parade.

Former head football coach Steve Hookfin left for Haywood.

Liberty is not alone. Jackson North Side football coach Tab Vowell migrated North to Peabody.  Before JCM went out of business the coaching door was revolving at a dizzying pace.

The good news is that Eric Jones officially takes over as JMCSS Super in a few days.  Jones will do all he can to stop the coaching exodus. His predecessors failed miserably.
