Talk-N Sports Gridiron Baker’s Dozen High School Football Poll – Week 4

Week 4 brought mixed reviews from the panel which resulted in some shifting in the Gridiron Baker’s Dozen.  The top 2 teams remain the same but it’s the 3-13 positions where teams begin to jockey for position.

                                                                                                     

No. 1  Westview (4-0):  The Chargers continued to dominate another opponent as they began region play with a 69-7 victory against Obion County in week 4.  The Chargers have scored 199 points while only allowing 40 points on defense, both are tops in their region and among the best in the state.  Last week’s rankings: #1.  Next week: vs. McNairy Central (3-1).

No. 2  Huntingdon (4-0): The Mustangs also continue to dominate opponents with a 62-30 win last week over Halls (TN).  With 2 victories in the region, Huntingdon begins to separate from the pack showing why they are the Class 2A State Champions.  Last week’s rankings: #2.  Next week: vs. #9 JCM (3-1). 

No. 3  Munford (3-0): The only team in Class 5A in this week’s poll, the Cougars continue to show they are a dominant force in WTN with a 34-30 victory over Kentucky powerhouse Woodford County. Munford has two more games before they begin their region schedule. Last week’s rankings: #4. Next week: vs. #6 Haywood (3-1).

No. 4  Lexington (4-0): The Tigers defeated North Side 48-34 for their second consecutive region victory.  The Tigers are off to their best start since starting 5-0 in 2013.  The Tigers also put themselves in great position in the region with 2 wins over Crockett Co and North Side.  Last week’s rankings: #3.  Next week: vs. Chester Co. (3-1).

No. 5  Jackson Christian (4-0): The Eagles continue to show they are one of the top teams in WTN.  JCS beat an undefeated St. George’s team 32-28 last week and moved up 4 spots in this week’s poll.  Last week’s rankings: #9.   Next week: vs. Fayette Academy (1-3).

No. 6  Haywood (3-1): The Tomcats defeated Lakeland Prep in a shootout last week 64-50 despite the sloppy conditions.  Haywood showed why they are a force in Class 4A and will have potentially their toughest game of the season this week.  Last week’s rankings: #8  Next week: vs. #3 Munford (3-0).

No. 7  Humboldt (4-0): Humboldt scored on the opening drive and the game was called for weather.  Vikings 7-0 over Middleton.  It was the week before when the Vikings defeated Peabody that showed why Humboldt may be a contender in Class 1A. Last week’s rankings: #11  Next week: vs. West Carroll (0-4).

No. 8  Crockett County (3-1): The Cavaliers got back in the win column this week with a region victory over Dyer Co 40-7.  Crockett County improved to 1-1 in the region and with another region game this week.  Last week’s rankings: #7  Next week: vs. #11Hardin Co. (3-1).

Two-way Tie

No. 9  JCM (3-1): The Cougars defeated Peabody 37-7 last week in Class 2A play.  An important win for the Cougars to keep in reach of Huntingdon.  Last week’s rankings: Unranked Next week: vs. #2 Huntingdon (4-0).

          Covington (3-1): Covington defeated Brighton 26-7 last week and will begin region play this week against Obion County.  The Chargers will need this win to keep pace with Westview.   Last week’s rankings: #12.  Next week: vs. Obion County (3-1).

No. 10  

No. 11  Hardin County (3-1): The Tigers have won 3 straight after the opening loss to Adamsville. Hardin defeated Chester Co 22-21 in their second straight region victory.   Last week’s rankings: Unranked.  Next week: vs. #8 Crockett County (3-1). 

Three-way Tie

No.12  North Side (2-1):  The Indians lost to #4 Lexington last week 34-48 and fell 7 spots in this week’s poll.  The Indians are 1-1 in the region with the win over South Side the week before, but have another tough opponent in Class 4A in Dyer County at home this week.   Last week’s rankings: #5.  Next week: vs. Dyer County (2-2). 

            Adamsville (3-1):  The Cardinals have a couple big wins this season already and a one point loss to Class 4A opponent Chester Co.  Adamsville continues region play this week against Lewis Co and can start to separate from the pack with a win.  Last week’s rankings: Unranked.  Next week: vs. Lewis County (1-3). 

            USJ (3-1):  The Bruins defeated Fayette Academy last week 28-7 and improved to 2-0 in the region.  The Bruins continue to show why they are one of the top teams in DII.  Last week’s rankings: # 13.  Next week: vs. FACS (0-3). 

No. 13

The Gridiron Baker’s Dozen is voted on by area coaches/former coaches, sports writers, and media.  Results are calculated based on the AP Top 25 Format.
