Dan M. Bland, aged 81, a cherished educator, coach, and family man, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, in Jackson, TN. Born on February 27, 1944, in Memphis, TN the son of the late Williford Daniel Bland, Sr and Charlotte Elizabeth Anderson Bland.
Dan’s life was marked by his passion for teaching, his love for football, and the strong bonds he forged with his family and community. Raised in Covington and later moving to Jackson, Dan was a standout student at Byars Hall High School in Covington, TN. His academic achievements were matched by his athletic prowess, leading him to Mississippi State University, where he became a star running back for the Bulldogs. In 1965, he proudly served as team captain, a testament to his leadership qualities both on and off the field. His football career reached new heights when he was drafted in 1966 as the 41st pick by the San Francisco 49ers. Following his time in the NFL, Dan furthered his education, earning a master’s degree in education from Memphis State University.
Dan’s professional life was dedicated to shaping young minds and cultivating athletic talent. He embarked on a distinguished coaching career that spanned several high schools in Tennessee, including Tullahoma, Farragut, Jackson Central-Merry, Columbia, Milan, and Humboldt High School. His dedication to his teams was evident in the way he mentored his players, instilling in them not only the strategies of the game but also the values of discipline, teamwork, and integrity.
A devout Christian, Dan lived his faith through his actions, offering guidance and support to those around him. He was a pillar in his community, always willing to lend a helping hand or a word of encouragement.
Beyond his professional and spiritual commitments, Dan was a loving and devoted family man. He is survived by his son, John Bland and his wife Candis of Alexander, AR, and his adoring grandchildren, Shreve and husband Ben, Jade, and Bo Michael, who will forever cherish the memories of their grandfather’s unwavering support and love. Dan also leaves behind his brother, David Karney and wife Kathy of Clopton, TN, as well as his dear companion, Debbie Shires of Jackson, TN. Each family member played a special role in his life, providing joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging.
Along with his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Dixon Bland and a son, Michael Bland.
Those who knew Dan would describe him as loving, intelligent, and passionate. He approached life with a zest that was contagious, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. Dan’s impact, particularly on the young men he coached and taught, will resonate for generations to come.
SERVICES: A time with family and friends will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors, with Rev. Justin Ramer officiating. Burial will follow in Brighton, TN at the Clopton First Methodist Church Cemetery.
As we bid farewell to Dan, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His memory will be treasured, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Dan’s journey on this earth may have ended, but the lessons he imparted and the love he shared will endure forever.
