
JACKSON Tenn (August 31, 2015) – On July 27th of last year gunfire rang out at Parkway East Apartments. Two victims were shot, one fatality.
Within two days police had two people in custody. Two brothers, 21-year-old Jakeil Waller and 17-year-old Jernigel Blackwell were charged with First Degree Murder and Attempted First Degree Murder.
On Monday in Circuit Court Jernigel Blackwell entered a Best Interest Plea to two counts of Aggravated Assault, allowing the other charges to be dismissed. Blackwell was sentenced to two consecutive 9-year terms for a total of 18 years.
In the afternoon of July 27 Jackson police were called about two people shot outside Parkway East Apartments at 33 Carver Avenue.
17-year-old Shomari Peterson, and a 21-year-old man, both of Jackson, had been shot. Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene. The 21-year-old man was transported to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and was later released.
According to investigators Jernigel Blackwell and Jakeil Waller both shot into a crowd of people striking both victims. Investigators say the fatal shots were fired by Jakeil Waller.
Police arrested Blackwell July 28 and Waller on July 29. On August 13 Jakeil Waller was convicted of Second Degree Murder and Reckless Endangerment.
