Rezoning, Capital Budget Summary, First & Second Readings highlight Jackson City Council meeting

Rezoning, a capital budget summary and First and Second Readings highlighted the Jackson City Council’s August meeting at Jackson City Hall, Tuesday.

The City Council approved the consideration of an Ordinance to rezone about 2.80 acres at 1694 Hollywood Drive, from Office Residential to Office Center.

The rezoning was one of four items presented during a First Reading.

* Approved a request of the Annexation, Plan of Service, and proposed zoning for an area referred to as “Summit,” generally located along the 4300 Block of U.S. Highway 45 North, north of Jack Exum Road, comprising of 95.5 acres.

The proposed zoning classifications for this annexation area are B-5 (Highway Business) District and RS-1/PRD (Single Family Residential) (District/Planned Residential Development) District.

* Approved consideration of an Ordinance to close and abandon a portion of Cooper Anderson Road, located at the northeast corner of Cooper Anderson Road and University Parkway.

* The City Council also approved the consideration of an Ordinance to amend the Official Code of the City of Jackson Title 12 Building, Utility, Etc. Codes, relative to vacant buildings.

Second Readings

* The City Council approved an Ordinance to close and abandon a portion of Gin Street between Young Street and the west margin of N&S Railroad.

* The City Council also approved an Ordinance to close and abandon a portion of an alley that runs between Westwood Avenue, Campbell Street, Prospect Avenue and North Lake Drive.

New Business

Paul Taylor, chairperson for the City’s Budget Committee, discussed the Capital Needs Summary.

“We have gone through and started collecting and vetting our capital needs for Fiscal Year 20,” Taylor said, “We are seeking approximately five- to $6 million, and we’re in the process of finalizing that number.

“The finance department is seeking the issuance of new bonds as well as the refunding of some 2009 bonds in order to save us on our debt service.”
