Issues on the national, state and local level were discussed when Capitol Talk was held at the Jackson Chamber, Friday.
U.S. Congressman David Kustoff (R-8th Congressional District), joined State Senator Ed Jackson, (R-27th District) Madison, Crockett, Dyer, Lake and Lauderdale Counties, Chris Todd, Tennessee House of Representatives (R-District 73), and Johnny Shaw, (D-District 80) Tennessee House of Representatives.
Kustoff discussed the unemployment rate has dropped to 3.8 percent nationally, and 5.5 million people have been added to the payroll.
“Our economy today, in Jackson-Madison County and the state of Tennessee, is really humming,” Kustoff said, “We worked very hard in the first year of President Trump’s administration to pass substantial tax cuts … put more money in the pockets of people all across West Tennessee, all across Tennessee and all across the nation.”
Ed Jackson said he wished each county he represents would have a format like Capitol Talk.
“It would bring the public out, instead of people hearing information second or third hand,” Jackson said, “But right now, there are four things we really need to address – education, health care, infrastructure and corrections in judges reform.”
Chris Todd said the growing number of concerns means more will be expected from each representative.
“It will put more requirements on us legislators to do our homework,” Todd said, “We will have to research the bills before they get to the floor and how they affect our communities.
“We have a number of legislative issues going on right now … and we are watching each one of those … ESAs (Education Savings Accounts) to medicaid block grants to health care improvements, all of them are very important to our neighbors.”
